The game's title.

“Coffee Run: An Office Adventure Game”, also known as "Hoops&Yoyo: Coffee Run!" or simply "Coffee Run!", is a web game made for the hoops&yoyo website in 2009, developed by Blit Games using Adobe Flash & ActionScript. This was also the 2nd web game released for the official US website, following after Video Maker.

The game consists of you choosing Hoops or Yoyo to play the stages. You can play stages published by other people or your own. In those stages you have to pass through obstacles such as Piddles, Marshy, Chilli Bear, and some other objects.

Unfortunately, the game is currently unplayable in its intended form, due to the broken ActionScript code, custom HTML coding from the original website being unavailable, the original website's declined popularity, and the original server hosting the game being shut down as well. As such, some of the details regarding data & information are missing.

Gameplay

Coffee Run is a level-making game that takes place in Hoops & Yoyo’s office space, where the goal is to drink the coffee at the opposite side of the room before the timer runs out. The player can drop and add whichever object they choose onto the grid map in the editor and can play as either Hoops or Yoyo, and using the arrow keys to move the character. Once a level is verified playable through testing, the player has the option to publish & share their custom level. The level name options were typically preset, but a player could pick any combination of preset words for their level.

If the player were to complete a submitted level online, the selected character would sing about winning the game.

In-Game Instructions

  1. Build your game level by selecting and dropping objects onto the game board.
  2. Add donuts all around. The player must collect all the donuts before getting coffee.
  3. Test your game. You can only publish games that you are able to complete.

Timer & Music

The timer, labeled “Time To Play” in the game's editor, is where the player can add however much time they want for Hoops or Yoyo to grab their coffee. The three timer options are 1 minute, 1 and a half minutes, and 2 minutes.

The music, labeled “Pick Music” in the game's editor, is the background song that plays when the player starts the game. There are three song options: “Insert Coin”, “Glo Stick”, and “Beanbag”.

Items/Helpers

Items, labeled “Add Helpers” in the game, are collectibles to help the player. These items vary in usefulness.

Pink Sprinkled Donut

This item boosts the player’s running pace & speeds up the music for a brief period of time, usually 3 to 7 seconds if one donut is eaten.

Paper Shield

This item is held against Hoops or Yoyo’s face to briefly act as a shield against distractions.

Office Chair

Sitting in the office chair allows for Hoops or Yoyo to quickly move across the office without running into distractions. The main downsides are the fact that the player can only move in one direction they’re walking in until they hit a wall or object.

Hoops & Yoyo Balloons

The balloons are distractions for the distractions, as walking next to them would inflate the balloons for a short period of time.

Bag of Coffee Beans

This item refills the coffee meter to a certain amount, to increase both the time limit and the player’s score upon completion.

Dinner Plate

This item does nothing for the player, but it is likely similar to the balloons, where it's function is to distract the distractions.

Obstacles/Distractions

Obstacles, labeled as “Add Distractions” in the game, are objects and characters meant to temporarily disrupt the player from reaching the coffee on time. Running into the distractions stops the player in their tracks with an exclamation but doesn’t stop the timer, hence adding difficulty to the game. The characters can only be placed once but can walk around on a random path. The objects can only be stationary, but multiple can be added across the map and depend on RNG.

Chili Bear

Chili Bear is the first character that can be placed on the map. His sprite contains him holding a clipboard. Bumping into him with either Hoops or Yoyo triggers a cutscene where they complain about extra work, both being unique to the character the player chose. Chili Bear is also the only character to not have a line of dialogue in this game.

Piddles

Piddles is the second character that can be placed on the map. She has the smallest sprite and hops around. Bumping into Piddles will trigger a cutscene where she talks about gossip and other jokes. She has 4 different cutscenes, 2 of which are custom to Hoops and Yoyo, making her with the longest and most cutscenes in the game.

Standing

standing. standing. standing. standing.

Walking

walking. walking. walking. walking.

Marshy

Marshy is the third and last character that can be placed on the map. His sprite is the second biggest, being shorter than Chili Bear. Bumping into him triggers a cutscene where Marshy complains about being run into. He has only one cutscene and it stays the same regardless of which character the player chooses.

Birthday Cake

The birthday cake is the first RNG based distraction object. During gameplay, if the candles are off and the cake is pink, the player can walk past them. However, if the cake turns white and the candles are lit up, if the player walks into it, Hoops or Yoyo will be forced to sing Happy Birthday for 4-5 seconds.

Radio

The radio is the second RNG based distraction object. During gameplay, the radio will be stationary and can be walked past. But if the radio begins to vibrate and light up when the player walks past, Hoops or Yoyo will be stuck for 4-5 seconds.

Telephone

The phone is the third and last RNG based distraction object. During gameplay, the phone will be still and remain quiet, making it safe for the player to walk past. Once the phone starts to ring and light up green, bumping into this will force the player to take a phone call for a brief amount of time.

Other Items

The last items that can be placed on the map are furniture and plain donuts. The furniture serves as extra boundaries for both the player and the distraction characters, with the three types being a cubicle, a plant, and a coat hanger. The plain donuts serve as an extra challenge to the player, where they have to collect all the plain donuts placed on the map before reaching the coffee. Finally, the eraser is simply there to remove unwanted objects on the map.

Trivia

  • Although archived snapshots of the game's page didn't archive the SWF file, the file itself has been redistributed across the internet, such as SWFchan in 2009 and Deviantart in 2019.
  • The game's page url is oddly named "gameCreator". This could imply that was the early name for coffee run, but it's unconfirmed.
  • In the level's editor icons, Piddles, Marshy and Chilli Bear's icons are bitmaps, while the rest of the icons are vectors.
  • Due to the developers simplifying the 3D sprites to fit in the grid for the game, several characters besides Piddles have similar heights.
  • The dancing loop animations were reused from Video Maker.
  • All of the songs in the game are royalty free songs from Universal Production Music. More details and information about the songs are on the UPM Page.
  • In Yoyo’s victory animation, Piddles can be heard laughing in the background.
